It has been said that trust is the glue that keeps society and organizations together. Joel Peterson, who retired in 2020 as Chairman of the Board at JetBlue, describes the power of trust succinctly: “[Trust] supports innovation and flexibility, and it makes life more enjoyable and more productive. People who live in high-trust environments thrive.”[1]
But how much attention do we pay to the ways in which we cultivate trust as an organization? The COVID-19 pandemic surprised most of us without having properly anticipated and prepared for such a dramatic shift in our lifestyles, and in many cases. It laid bare our inability to adjust our management styles and respond to the needs of our organizations to navigate the uncertainty of the times. The health emergency created a trust emergency.
When it comes to building trust, we are left with mostly generic notions of what trust is and how it works, which render us ineffective during periods of rapid change and significant unsettlement.
