Organizations are a network of
commitments made by people. Leaders can help by building strong trusting
relationships with others at all levels in the organization.
There are two areas where trust is
built:
- Delivery
of commitments to bring value to others
- Sharing
genuine feedback and opinions with others
A
good PM helps the team do the first one, and an expert CM practitioner knows
how to create a safe space for conversations that brings forward different
interpretations of the change and forges a shared story of what is happening.
The organizations of the future are
looking at change as the norm, not the exception. Embracing change by making it
part of their strategy can put transformation in a more positive light and help
take care of internal and external stakeholders alike.
- External Stakeholders: A customer centric culture keeps the focus on
excellence in customer satisfaction.
- Internal Stakeholders: Embedding transformation skills into the
organizational culture and incorporating certain practices in the daily
interactions builds agility and sustainability.
Organizations are usually good at
communicating change during a change project, to accelerate change adoption. If
those purposeful communications practices were to be extended as part of the
culture, they could greatly contribute to sustainable change.
Building
informal communication practices among a network of influencers in the
organization is also a very effective communication strategy.
Leaders at the top, sponsoring the change, are usually committed and invested in making the change a successful reality. Once the change starts moving down in the organization, other leaders may feel they are committed but their efforts do not reflect that. It may be because of over-commitment, misunderstanding their role, lack of experience in supporting change, change saturation, etc. To enroll these leaders in their support and championing of change in the long term, top leaders need to engage everyone in conversation and develop trust across the organization to flush out the root of the challenges and address them.
